Maersk is preparing to test a containerized battery on board one of its containerships as they work to develop low carbon solutions to meet environmental goals. The 600 kWh battery, which is housed inside a shipping container, will be installed on board the 249-meter MV Maersk Cape Town next month. The hope is that the trial will provide a greater understanding of energy storage and help Maersk determine if battery power could help reduce ship emissions in the long term. The battery that they are currently testing is still several years away from becoming a technically- and economically viable power source for ocean-going ships, however, it can be used to help improve the efficiency of a vessel’s onboard electrical systems, such as auxiliary generators.
