Just days following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, another maritime incident occurred near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York. A large container ship lost propulsion but, unlike the Baltimore incident, it retained power. With the aid of three nearby towing vessels, the ship was anchored safely north of the bridge. This incident, though not uncommon according to maritime experts, has drawn heightened attention due to the recent bridge collapse. Retired US Navy Captain Lawrence Brennan emphasized the effectiveness of New York Harbor’s Vessel Traffic Service (VTS), likening it to air traffic control for ships, which he noted is more sophisticated than Baltimore’s system.
