Mexico is poised for a mining boom after federal policy changes unlocked more than $11 billion in previously stalled mining projects, triggering expectations of strong breakbulk and project cargo demand. The reactivated projects, concentrated in Zacatecas, Sonora, Chihuahua, and Durango, will require large volumes of heavy machinery, power generation equipment, and structural steel during construction. Industry officials say over 110 mining permits have already been approved, with the remaining backlog expected to clear by mid-2026. Carriers anticipate sustained cargo flows once mines are operational, including outbound minerals and inbound consumables and spare parts. Major ports such as Altamira, Veracruz, and Manzanillo are expected to see increased mining-related traffic.
