Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has further expanded its already massive fleet by placing an order with Jiangsu Rongsheng Heavy Industries for eight new containerships, each with a capacity of 12,000 TEUs, valued at $170 million per vessel. This deal, which could extend to a total of 12 ships if options are exercised, brings the contract’s potential value to over $2 billion. Additionally, the shipping giant has 131 ships on order, totaling 1.9 million TEUs in future capacity. MSC’s fleet expansion has been aggressive, with significant recent investments. Notably, the company has also committed to 18 LNG-powered containerships from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and Penglai Jinglu, ranging from 19,000 to 11,500 TEUs, scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2028.
