Canada has announced new tariffs on Chinese imports, including a 100% surtax on Chinese electric vehicles starting October 1, 2024, and a 25% surtax on Chinese steel and aluminum from October 15, 2024. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated these measures aim to protect Canadian workers and industries from unfair trade practices. In response, there is concern that China might retaliate by targeting Canadian exports, such as canola. The Canola Council of Canada emphasizes its commitment to maintaining access to the Chinese market, a key destination for Canadian canola. Previous restrictions on canola, which were linked to political tensions, had significantly impacted exports but were lifted in 2022 after Canada resolved issues related to Huawei’s CFO.
