Chinese automakers and shippers are rapidly expanding their car-carrying vessel fleet to support a surge in EV exports, positioning China to have the world’s fourth-largest fleet by 2028. Currently, China ranks eighth with 33 ships but has 47 more on order, which will boost its global fleet share from 2.4% to 8.7%. Major firms like SAIC Motor, Chery Automobile, and BYD, along with shippers such as COSCO, are driving this growth. The expansion has raised concerns in the US and EU about market saturation and unfair trade practices due to state subsidies, sparking international discussions.
