In fiscal 2024, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) plans to start extensive testing of biofuels for long-term use in its heavy oil-fired ships. This step is part of NYK’s broader goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030 from 2021 levels. The trial will initially use biofuels for three months across different vessel types, with plans to extend this duration for deeper analysis. These trials aim to assess the long-term safety and consistent supply of biofuels, which are produced from biological sources and are considered a key option for achieving net-zero CO2 emissions in maritime transport. This initiative aligns with NYK’s commitment to environmental sustainability, as outlined in their ESG strategy.
