Clarksons Research’s latest Green Technology Tracker for the first half of 2024 highlights key trends in global shipping. Approximately one third of newbuild orders focused on alternative fuels, led by LNG (51% excluding LNG carriers), followed by methanol, ammonia, LPG, and hydrogen. The tracker underscores slow progress in port infrastructure for green fuels, with LNG available in 273 ports and methanol in only 29. Energy-saving technologies cover 33.5% of fleet tonnage, including propeller ducts and air lubrication systems. Despite efforts, shipping’s GHG emissions are expected to rise by 3% in 2024. Scrubbers are fitted on 28.3% of ships, with ongoing retrofitting and new orders.
