Manitoba is investing $51 million to upgrade the Hudson Bay Railway and build a new critical minerals storage facility at the Port of Churchill, bringing its total commitment to $87.5 million. Prime Minister Mark Carney said the federal government will fund the Arctic Research Foundation to study future deployment of specialized icebreakers, ice tugs and research vessels at the northern port. The announcement follows a joint meeting between Carney and Premier Wab Kinew, who affirmed Churchill’s role as a key national trade asset. The Port of Churchill Plus initiative remains under review by the Major Projects Office as a transformative strategy. Both governments pledged to accelerate planning, aiming to release a comprehensive strategy in spring 2026.
