Pacific Basin, a leading Hong Kong-based dry bulk shipping company, is adopting a new, sustainable graphene-based propeller coating, XGIT-PROP, across its entire fleet. Developed by Canadian company GIT Coatings, this biocide-free hard foul release coating is shown to boost vessel performance by up to 4%, as indicated in tests, including those by Stolt Tankers. After witnessing positive outcomes on a supramax dry bulk vessel, Pacific Basin plans to apply this coating to 40 ships during their 2024 drydock maintenance, marking a significant step in dry bulk sector decarbonization. This move away from traditional silicone paint, used since 2007, aims to maintain smooth propeller surfaces without frequent polishing or complete recoating due to edge damage. Sanjay Relan of Pacific Basin highlighted the initiative’s potential for enhanced sustainability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness fleet-wide.
