The Panama Canal has issued an Advisory to Shipping stating that, effective immediately, it will increase the maximum authorized draft to 13.7 meters, nearly two weeks ahead of schedule. This adjustment comes earlier due to the anticipated start of the rainy season and current water levels in Gatun Lake. The number of daily transits through the panamax locks has already risen from 17 to 24 as of May 16, and will further increase to eight per day starting tomorrow for neopanamax locks, totaling 32 vessel transits daily. Water levels in Gatun and Alhajuela Lakes have surpassed those of the same period in 2023 since May 26, marking the onset of the rainy season.
