The Panama Canal Authority (PCA) has announced the introduction of a dedicated weekly transit slot for low-emission neo-panamax vessels, set to begin on October 5, 2025. Known as the “NetZero Slot,” this initiative aims to incentivize investment in low-carbon maritime technologies by reserving a non-auctioned slot for ships with dual-fuel engines using fuels with carbon intensities below 75 gCO₂(e)/MJ. The slot will be awarded through a competition held 30 days before transit, with preference given to loaded vessels and those with larger capacities. The winner will receive a guaranteed 24-hour transit, the ability to select a transit date within the week, and just-in-time service. Further specifications for a second phase, expected in 2026, will be announced at a later date.
