The Port of Los Angeles recorded more than 120 million attempted cyberattacks in August, including intrusion, network exploitation, credential harvesting and malware activity. The port operates a seven-layer cybersecurity defence involving its own security team and private-sector partners as maritime operations become increasingly dependent on digital systems. At the same time, shifting trade patterns are changing the port’s cargo mix, with China’s share of throughput declining from about 60% to 40% over the past decade while trade with Vietnam has quadrupled. Following its busiest June-to-August period on record, the port could see volumes increase another 5% to 10% as Panama Canal restrictions redirect more Asian cargo to the US West Coast.
