Air quality at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles saw significant improvements in 2023, largely due to investments by the maritime industry, marine terminals, and ocean carriers. According to the ports’ 2023 emissions inventories, reductions exceeded the goals set by the Clean Air Action Plan since 2005, with decreases of 91% for diesel particulate matter (DPM), 72% for nitrogen oxides (NOx), 98% for sulfur oxides (SOx), and 20% for greenhouse gases (GHG). Jacqueline Moore, Vice President of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association, highlighted these results as a major success in improving air quality.
