Portsmouth International Port in the UK has begun constructing a shore power system that will allow ships to connect to clean electric power while docked. The system will be supported by a 600-meter, 33-kilovolt cable linked to renewable energy sources. Once operational in spring 2025, up to three ships can plug in simultaneously, enabling them to switch off their engines and operate on battery power while in the harbor. The £27.4 million project, funded by the UK government and Portsmouth City Council, aims to cut emissions by 20,000 tonnes of CO2e annually from 2027. Brittany Ferries, a key partner, will be among the first to use the system with its new LNG-electric hybrid ferries.
