Potential U.S. diesel export ban could raise fuel costs across Canada

A potential U.S. restriction on diesel exports could push global fuel prices sharply higher, although Western Canada’s refinery capacity would provide some protection for Prairie farmers and other consumers. Refineries in Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C. supply significant domestic volumes, while Eastern Canada is more dependent on U.S. refined-product imports. Analysts warn that higher international prices would nevertheless flow into Western Canadian markets, where diesel costs are already elevated. While President Donald Trump has expressed support for limiting diesel exports, U.S. officials have given conflicting signals about whether a temporary ban is actually under consideration, and the refining industry has warned such restrictions could disrupt fuel markets in both the U.S. and abroad.
