A new analysis by Danish consultancy Sea-Intelligence shows that empty containers now make up 41% of global container transport, a sharp rise from 31% in 2019 before the pandemic. Measured in teu-miles, the data indicates that for every 10 miles a loaded container travels, an empty one must move 4.1 miles, reflecting worsening imbalances in global trade flows and container repositioning challenges.
