The City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA Ports) have unveiled plans for a new multimodal port and trade corridor linking Northern Ontario to Southern Ontario and global markets. Anchored by a proposed port in Sault Ste. Marie, potentially on Algoma Steel’s site, the initiative will integrate marine, rail, and highway networks to support mining, forestry, steel, advanced manufacturing, and agriculture. Officials say the project will boost Canada’s supply chain resilience, attract investment, and generate jobs while aligning with federal and provincial economic strategies. Next steps include consultations with governments and Indigenous partners, infrastructure analysis, and outreach to the industry.
