At COP29 in Baku, more than 50 key players in the maritime industry, including Anglo-Eastern, Fortescue, GasLog, Mitsui OSK Lines, and Trafigura, have signed a call to action for green hydrogen in shipping. The initiative, titled “Green Hydrogen and Green Shipping,” urges investments in hydrogen-derived fuels to reduce emissions and accelerate maritime decarbonization. The signatories aim to ensure that at least 5-10% of the sector’s energy comes from zero or near-zero emission sources by 2030. Fortescue’s chairman, Dr Andrew Forrest, emphasized the need for a zero-emissions fuel standard, warning against wasting a decade on incremental solutions. UN Climate Champion Nigar Aparadarai stressed that decarbonization efforts must be inclusive, benefiting all economies without leaving anyone behind.
