Stolt Tankers has become the first shipping company to apply the X-GIT FUEL graphene technology to the hull of one of its chemical tankers. Developed by Graphite Innovation & Technologies (GIT) Coatings, the technology has the potential to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The hard foul-release hull coating creates an ultra-low friction surface, which is expected to deliver fuel savings of between 5% and 7% by decreasing friction between the hull and the water and removing marine growth. Stolt Tankers also applied the graphene coating to the propellers of more than 40 ships earlier this year.
