Towage operator Svitzer is progressing with its project to create the world’s first methanol hybrid fuel cell tug, aiming to surpass battery-powered vessels in endurance and operational flexibility. The tug will use methanol fuel cells and batteries for its electrical propulsion system, with the potential to prevent around 1,300 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Collaborating with naval architect Robert Allan, Svitzer plans to complete the vessel’s design, construction considerations, and equipment selection in the next development phase. The tug is scheduled to commence operations by mid-2025 at Sweden’s Port of Gothenburg, contributing to the port’s emission reduction goals.
