The International Longshoremen Association (ILA), which represents some 45,000 port workers in 36 ports between Maine and Texas, is displaying a determined stance in its face-off with port employers over a new labour contract. The ILA on Monday called off this week’s planned start of talks with the US Maritime Alliance, citing one member of that employer group’s use of automation technology in violation of prior agreements. The ILA President has alerted locals at vital trade hubs like New York/New Jersey and Houston to be ready to strike on Oct. 1, following the contract expiry.
