Transport Canada is investing $3.2 million in the ECHO Program and $300,000 in the Whale Report Alert System (WRAS) to enhance cetacean protection. Fisheries and Oceans Canada is considering long-term protections for killer whales through potential amendments to Marine Mammal Regulations, with a public survey open until September 3, 2024, to gather feedback. Measures effective from June 1 include mandatory speed-restricted zones, interim sanctuary zones, and a voluntary speed reduction zone. Vessels must maintain a distance of 400 meters from all killer whales, with fishery closures in key foraging areas.
