Transport Canada’s latest Ship Safety Bulletin 20/2023 outlines the certification and training requirements for individuals serving on certain ships operating in polar waters. It applies to crew members on Canadian vessels operating in polar waters under SOLAS Chapter XIV and any other vessels mandated to have a certified individual for polar waters operations as per the Arctic Shipping Safety and Pollution Prevention Regulations (ASSPPR). The bulletin specifies the basic and advanced training prerequisites and certification criteria for masters, chief mates, and officers in charge of a navigational watch, allowing them to adhere to international requirements until the Marine Personnel Regulations are updated.
