President Donald Trump’s new $8.6 billion Arctic defence plan, dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill,” allocates major funding to expand the U.S. Coast Guard’s icebreaker fleet. The bill includes $4.3 billion for up to three new Polar Security Cutters, $3.5 billion for medium Arctic cutters, and $816 million for additional light and medium icebreakers. As Arctic ice recedes and global competition intensifies, Trump aims to counter Russian and Chinese advances by reviving U.S. shipbuilding and securing northern trade routes and resources. U.S. shipbuilders like Bollinger, Edison Chouest, and Davie are among the potential contractors, though the project faces cost overruns and may require foreign yard waivers to meet fleet targets.
