The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has launched a broad safety issue investigation (M24A0348) into shipboard fires on commercial vessels and Canada’s emergency response capacity. Triggered by nearly 400 vessel fire reports over the past decade, with 10% resulting in total vessel loss, the investigation will examine crew preparedness, fixed fire suppression system use, and the readiness of shore-based firefighting teams. The TSB will analyze past incidents, conduct stakeholder consultations, and may share findings internationally. This follows continued concerns about gaps in Canada’s marine emergency preparedness, despite prior safety recommendations.
