On June 18, 2023, the manned submersible known as Titan, carrying 5 crew members, was diving to the Titanic wreck site southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland and Labrador, with surface support provided by the Canadian-flagged cargo vessel Polar Prince. Approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes into its descent, contact with Titan was lost. Search operations confirmed debris near the Titanic wreckage, indicating the submersible was lost with no survivors. The investigation revealed Titan and its launch platform were imported into Canada from the United States in 2021 and 2022, transported by the Canadian vessel Horizon Arctic in those years, and by Polar Prince in 2023. Despite operating extensively in Canadian waters and beyond, Titan was never registered or certified in Canada or any other country. The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) highlighted risks associated with unregistered submersibles in Canadian waters, issuing a marine safety information letter (MSI 01/24) to Transport Canada.
