A coalition of US manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and trade groups has urged the Biden administration to assist in restarting contract negotiations between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and maritime employers ahead of the September 30 expiration of their master contract. The ILA represents 45,000 dockworkers along the US East and Gulf coasts, and negotiations have stalled over technology provisions. The letter, signed by 161 organizations, emphasizes the importance of avoiding disruptions to port operations amid a shift back to West Coast gateways. The ILA’s stance on political intervention during an election year adds another layer of complexity.
