The UK Chamber of Shipping has released a roadmap outlining how the country’s maritime sector can achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The plan proposes £700 million ($915.5 million) in investments in the upcoming Budget to support the UK’s ambition of becoming an environmentally sustainable shipping hub. Central to the strategy is updating the 2019 Clean Maritime Plan, which aimed to guide emission reduction efforts but lacked follow-through. Maritime bodies are calling for a new long-term decarbonization strategy. Key recommendations in the roadmap include continued funding for the UK SHORE program to accelerate domestic clean maritime technology development, implementing shore power infrastructure for ships at ports, exempting lifeline ferry services from emissions trading fees until 2030, and supporting the Maritime Training (SMarT) scheme to ensure the industry has the skilled workforce needed to meet its sustainability goals.
