Nearly 18,000 federal public servants have received notices in December and January warning their positions may be cut as part of Ottawa’s comprehensive expenditure review. The notices span at least 30 departments and agencies and are a first step in a process that does not automatically mean job losses. Statistics Canada, Global Affairs, Health Canada and Transport Canada are among the most affected so far. The government plans to eliminate 28,000 positions over four years and achieve $60 billion in savings under Budget 2025. Unions say the scale and speed of notices have raised widespread anxiety across the public service, even as departments emphasize modernization and efficiency goals.
