The US Coast Guard has awarded contracts to Finland’s Rauma Marine Constructions and Louisiana-based Bollinger Shipyards to build up to six new Arctic Security Cutter icebreakers. The initiative follows new US–Finland agreements and funding authorized under President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The cutters will strengthen US sovereignty, protect Arctic shipping routes, secure energy and mineral resources, and counter growing foreign activity in the region. The first Finland-built vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2028, with the first US-built cutter expected in 2029. The program combines Finland’s icebreaker expertise with long-term domestic shipbuilding expansion.
