US President Donald Trump criticized Canada as the House of Representatives voted against his tariffs on Canadian goods, a largely symbolic move that revealed some Republican unease with his trade agenda. Six Republicans joined Democrats in opposing tariffs imposed under a fentanyl-related emergency declaration, though the measure lacks the votes to override a likely presidential veto. Trump has used the International Economic Emergency Powers Act to impose broad duties on Canada, alongside sector-specific tariffs on steel, aluminium, autos, and lumber. Critics argue fentanyl seizures at the northern border are minimal and say the tariffs are harming US businesses and bilateral relations. The dispute comes as the Supreme Court reviews Trump’s use of emergency powers to enact trade measures.
