The ten largest US container ports experienced a significant 19.3% increase in inbound container volume this August, marking the eleventh consecutive month of growth and making 2024 a standout year for US port activity. The August volume reached 2,211,831 TEUs, close to the record set in May 2022. While some attribute this surge to concerns over a potential labour strike at East and Gulf Coast ports, industry expert John McCown attributes it to economic strength and stable inventory levels. West Coast ports have notably outperformed their East and Gulf Coast counterparts, with an 18.1 percentage point difference in August growth, reflecting a trend of coastal shifting likely influenced by the anticipated labour disruptions.
The US Maritime Alliance (USMX) has filed a complaint against the union with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) over what it said was the union leadership’s refusal to return to the bargaining table. If the group’s request is granted, the union would be required to return to negotiations.
