The US Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound has initiated a four-year cetacean desk pilot program aimed at reducing the negative impact of maritime traffic on endangered and threatened whales in the Salish Sea. This program, made possible through legislation, will work within the Puget Sound Vessel Traffic Service to offer mariners real-time information on whale locations via the Whale Report Alert System, enhancing efforts to avoid whale disturbances and ship strikes. The initiative involves collaboration with various federal, tribal, international, and state agencies, as well as NGOs, to improve situational awareness and protect these marine mammals.
