The US Coast Guard has announced it will not enforce California’s new regulation requiring commercial harbour craft to install diesel particulate filters (DPF) due to safety concerns, including fire risks. The rule, aimed at reducing air pollution, is opposed by various business organizations and has led to a lawsuit from 17 states against the EPA over California’s unique air standard-setting authority. Despite the controversy, CARB is pressing ahead with the regulation, which could impose significant costs on the maritime industry and has raised questions about the feasibility and safety of DPF technology.
