Wärtsilä has unveiled its first commercial carbon capture system (CCS) for ships, marking a major advancement in maritime emissions reduction. Installed on the Clipper Eris, a Solvang ASA ethylene carrier, the system has been operational since February 2025 and can cut CO₂ emissions by up to 70%. Designed to work with various carbon-based fuels and existing emission control systems, the CCS offers an immediate pathway for shipowners to meet tightening environmental regulations. Developed since 2019, the solution captures 10 tonnes of CO₂ daily and is estimated to cost €50–70 per tonne. Wärtsilä and Solvang are now preparing future vessels to be CCS-ready.
