International Container Terminal Services, Inc (ICTSI) is investing $300 million to expand its terminal capacity at the port of Manzanillo, Mexico, from 1.4 million TEU to 2 million TEU. This expansion comes as container trade between China and Mexico reaches new heights, with January to May volumes up 28% year-on-year. Mexico’s role as a key trading partner for the US has intensified, partly due to tariffs on Chinese goods, leading to a surge in Chinese investment in Mexican manufacturing. The increase in trade has prompted speculation about future shifts in container volumes, with potential impacts on US-China trade relations and US tariffs on imports.
