Global container shipping rates have surged, with Drewry’s World Container Index jumping 41% this week to $3,527 per 40-foot container. The spike is driven by revived transpacific trade activity following President Trump’s pause on reciprocal tariffs and ongoing legal uncertainty surrounding their enforcement. Rates on key Asia–U.S. routes, particularly Shanghai to Los Angeles, have soared 57% to nearly $5,900 — more than doubling since early May. Similar gains are seen on Asia–Europe routes. However, analysts caution that the rise may be short-lived, with rates expected to soften later in 2025 as supply-demand balances shift and legal challenges to U.S. trade measures unfold.
