The tit-for-tat port fee measures imposed simultaneously by Washington and Beijing have triggered a wave of boardroom changes across the global shipping sector. China’s Special Port Fees, targeting vessels with 25% or more US ownership, control, or board representation, have led companies such as Okeanis Eco Tankers, Pacific Basin, and Danaos Corp. to reshuffle directors and committees to reduce compliance exposure. Others, including Star Bulk, NORDEN, DHT Holdings, and 2020 Bulkers, have publicly clarified that their US shareholding remains below the 25% threshold, placing them outside the scope of China’s new levy.
