On World Environment Day, Global Container Terminals (GCT) announced a major sustainability achievement: GCT Vanterm in Burrard Inlet has fully transitioned to renewable fuels as of August 2024, replacing conventional diesel across all terminal equipment. This shift, achieved through partnerships with Burnaby Refinery and SPAL General Constructors Corporation (owned by the Tsleil-Waututh Nation), supports GCT’s broader climate goals of a 45% emissions reduction by 2030 and Net Zero by 2050. The initiative has already delivered a 68% drop in emissions in its first full quarter and reflects GCT’s commitment to Indigenous economic reconciliation under TRC Call to Action #92. Plans are underway to expand renewable fuel use across all GCT terminals in 2025.
