Transport Canada is projecting a 41% budget reduction, from $3.2 billion this year to $1.9 billion in 2027–28, alongside the loss of about 1,000 jobs. Programs most at risk include the Oceans Protection Plan, the Green Shipping Corridor initiative, and incentives for zero-emission heavy vehicles, as several funding streams are set to sunset. The “green and innovative” division faces the steepest cuts, with spending expected to fall from $672 million to $211 million and staffing down by a third. Officials say some funding may be renewed in future federal budgets, but the extent depends on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government-wide spending review.
